Christians packed the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception to listen to the preaching of Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Port Victoria, Mgr Denis Wiehe, who summed up what the wonderful feast of Easter is along with the victory of Jesus.
“The gospel is the source of our faith. It is through the gospel that we read about the witnesses who discovered the empty tomb on the First Easter Sunday and then it is through the gospels that we learned that Jesus appeared to them physically so that we knew that he was bodily resurrected,” he said.
He said that it is through their witness that we believe in Jesus and when we believe in Jesus our sins are forgiven.
“The weight of our sins is taken away because we put our trust and faith in Jesus. And secondly, the road to God, our Father is opened as through his victory he has allowed us a way to our Father,” he said.
The orthodox community also gathered in numbers for the holy liturgy for Easter by Father Sergios Janosevic of the parish of Seychelles of the Greek Orthodox patriarchate of Alexandria and all Africa.
The liturgy was held in the Hibiscus room of Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay while the Anglicans held a lively service to commemorate Easter at the St Paul’s Cathedral, led by Bishop James Wong and Reverend Daniel Kallee.
