Four local artists ̶ Nigel Henri, Robert Alexis, James Agricole and Allen Barreau ̶ will represent Seychelles in the ‘pARTage International Artists workshop’ in Mauritius under the theme ‘Migrations, Identity and Belonging’.
They received their travel documents yesterday in a brief ceremony at the National Arts Council (NAC) conference room in the presence of the NAC’s chief executive Jimmy Savy and other NAC staff.
The artists’ trip has been made possible with the help of NAC, Cinea (Creative Industries and National Events Agency) and the Ministry of Culture.
Mr Savy stated that such workshop will enable the artists to expose their work and represent Seychelles.
“pARTage is a workshop in Mauritius that attracts artists from different countries. NAC was invited to represent Seychelles in the workshop. At first we chose only one artist from Praslin. Allen Barreau, but other artists from Seylar were also interested to take part in it. So we decided with the help of CINEA and Seylar to help fund their tickets with their accommodation,” he said.
Two NAC staff will accompany the artists.
pARTage is a registered, non-profit artists-led organisation based in Mauritius with the aim of promoting art in Mauritius as well in the region (Comoros, Madagascar, Reunion and Seychelles). This is done through numerous local exhibitions, conferences, workshops and residencies.
On behalf of the artists Mr Henri thanked NAC and Cinea for making the trip possible.
“NAC is always present when it comes to promoting local artists with the help of Cinea. We are ready to represent Seychelles in such workshop and showcase our talents,” he said.
During the two-week workshop, the artists will be exposed to diverse activities such as working in a common space where they will be provided with the necessary tools and materials to allow them to experiment fully in their favourite media. Each artist will present his personal work and also talk about art in his country and take part in art exhibitions, among others.
The event is expected to attract participants from Mauritius, Madagascar, Iceland, Trinidad, Comoros, Congo, India, Reunion, Russia, South Africa, Canada, China, UK and Seychelles.
